Table Etiquette for Babies

Three blog posts in a row - can you believe it?

This week I found a copy of "Etiquette" by Emily Post from 1937. It is a great book - lots of advice on how to hire domestic help and how to extend invitations to the country house or yacht. I like this book even better than Miss Manners' "Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior." So, next time I invite you to have cocktails on the yacht, I'll know exactly how to do it. ;)

In the table manners section, one of the headings is "A Baby's First Lesson in Table Manners." And I quote, "The first lesson to teach a baby - even before he can feed himself- is that food is to be put into the mouth neatly, and that when food is in his mouth his lips must be kept closed."

So much for that etiquette lesson - we've got a long way to go!

The Farm Book

Last weekend we went to the Marion Arts Festival and the Marion Library Book Sale. I was so excited because I found "The Farm Book" for Simon. I had this book when I was a little girl and I loved it. I think my Grandma Curson still has it at her house. This book is available on Amazon, just an updated edition. I was able to find the original 1964 version - and it only cost 25 cents. The original price on the book was 29 cents - so I think I got a good deal.

Milestones and a Day at the Park

Today has been a big day for Simon. This morning, he ate an entire banana by himself, along with part of a pancake. Then at lunch, he ate steamed carrots and peas by himself. I know, it doesn't sound like a big deal, but for the past month, Simon has wanted nothing to do with finger foods other than Cheerios. That boy is a Cherrio-holic!

It was such a beautiful day today, so instead of painting our dining room, we decided to go for a bike ride to the park a few blocks away. Simon got to try the swing again and also got to stick his toes in the sandbox. He wasn't so sure at first, but I think he liked it in the end.

Si On The Move

Simon has been on the move in more ways than one. This week we tried him out in his new bike trailer. We've taken a few trips around the block and tomorrow his helmet comes, so hopefully he doesn't mind that too much. Friday is National Bike To Work Day, so I'm hoping if the weather holds out, I can pick him up in his trailer on my way home.

We found a great park about a mile from our house. It's a good walk with the dogs and Simon loves the industrial size swing they have there. Who doesn't love a giant rubber diaper?

When Simon chases the dogs outside, he likes to look at them through the glass under the dog door. He scoots up, puts his little butt up in the air and watches them watch him. The dogs are actually waiting to get back in the house and sometimes they just nose their way through and brush him aside. Then Simon just goes for their water which is gross.

More Cinco de Simon. He looks a little sad sitting on a jumbo donkey stuffed with candy, fruit snacks and parachute men. He must know this donkey will soon be meeting its fate... which it did via a sawed-off hockey stick.

Here's more park fun. I think daddy likes the slide more than Simon.
